The volume keeps getting turned up—in our world and in our lives.
In a world shouting at us all the time to do this and avoid that, it’s more imperative than ever to grow still and pay attention.
But even if we are committed to doing that, how easy it can be to still miss things. This point was driven home to me recently.
This hangs on my fridge.
I invite you to look, really look. Do you see it? I didn’t. Not for years. Not until someone else pointed it out to me. It doesn’t say “listen.” It says “litsen.”
I can’t tell you how many times I have paused in front of this, how many times I have committed to listening to myself and the world around me as an act of love.
And here I had been missing something all along.
These small discoveries can be everywhere, often hiding right before our very eyes. For instance, it can be easy to point fingers at someone else when something goes wrong, but have you ever realized that there is a “u” and an “i” in ruin?
Here’s another—there is a “yes” in all our “eyes.”
Perhaps this one is obvious, but “sacred” and “scared” are made up of exactly the same letters. Which one we choose to live by will shape all our adventures.
And notice something else—the difference between sacred and scared isn’t huge. It’s the tiniest of tweaks. The smallest of changes. A this instead of that.
This can come as a relief. We might think we have to make a huge change or a grand gesture to live lives that are Real and True. But small choice after small choice, we decide the future of our selves and the world.
And one of the best small choices we can make is to “litsen” to our true north, our inner compass, our deepest self. Then we can make friends with challenges, finding out where they grew up, learning what they are hungry for.
When we “litsen,” we live expectantly, as if revelations are continually being thrown our way.
And we can know the difference between nowhere and now here is the smallest of spaces.
To help us do this work, it is crucial to have faith in our practices——of walking, gardening, meditation, yoga. Let them bring you courage, so you can have a soft heart in a hard world. So you can litsen and love and live light and shine.
